Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to solve both aesthetic and functional problems in the nose. While rhinoplasty surgery corrects the aesthetics of the nose, it also restructures the aesthetic balance of the face and gives the person self-confidence.

Rhinoplasty is the most frequently performed plastic surgery in Turkey and is also performed quite frequently around the world. The goal of rhinoplasty surgery is not to draw attention to the nose. The goal of the surgery is to obtain a natural, balanced, facially compatible and beautiful nose structure. In daily life, no one looks at your nose for a long time. Eye contact is established when communicating with each other. In cases where the nose is large or in cases of arched nose, crooked nose, wide nose, low nose, long nose, etc. attention is concentrated on the nose. The aim is to eliminate nose problems and restore attention to the eyes.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most challenging and most technical surgeries of plastic surgeons. For this reason, the experience of the surgeon who will perform the surgery is very important.

The majority of rhinoplasty candidate patients also have functional problems within the nose. Common problems among these are the following:

– Curvature in the midline cartilage and bone of the nose (septum deviation)
– Structural deficiency in the nasal valves
– Nasal bone stenosis
– External bone curvatures of the nose
– Growth in the nasal concha (turbinate hypertrophy)

In rhinoplasty surgery, the aim is to treat both functional and aesthetic problems, if any, in the same session and to complete the surgery in a single session.

It is wrong to talk about the perfect nose and the perfect doctor in rhinoplasty surgery, because rhinoplasty results performed by the same surgeon on different patients may differ from each other. This is not a factor that depends solely on the surgeon. Because each person’s face shape, skin structure and tissue quality are different, the same surgeon can have very different rhinoplasty results. The main purpose of rhinoplasty is to express that the person has a nose that is natural, compatible with the person’s facial structure and beautiful for her face, in a way that it is not obvious that plastic surgery has been performed when viewed from the front.

Rhinoplasty Examination

The surgery candidate will receive information about what is possible in terms of aesthetics and what kind of nose planning will be made. Nose planning is done during the examination, the patient’s expectations and the surgeon’s plan are discussed, and a plan is often determined based on visuals. Rhinoplasty doctors consider individual factors when planning. Your doctor will give you verbal and written explanations about the risks and side effects of rhinoplasty surgery. During the rhinoplasty examination, you can see before and after photos of rhinoplasty and get an idea about your doctor’s technique.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Preparation

  • Since driving is not recommended when returning home from surgery, it is recommended to get help from a driver or companion to accompany you.
  • Patients who smoke should quit smoking at least 3 weeks in advance.
  • You should inform your doctor about all medications you use, especially blood thinners, before surgery.
  • Herbal teas, medications, vitamins and nutritional supplements may be stopped by your doctor before surgery.
  • You should prepare yourself to stay in the hospital for one night after the surgery.

Postoperative Period

  • You should not eat or drink anything for a while after the surgery. While you are in the hospital, nurses will tell you when you can start drinking water. You can start drinking water at the 4th hour of the surgery, and gradually switch to solid foods at the end of the 6th hour.
  • You need to walk with a companion and/or a nurse as early as possible after the surgery (when the nurses measure your blood pressure and say there is no problem for you to take a walk). It is also recommended that you move your legs and feet in the bed while you lie down.
  • It is recommended that you apply ice to both eyes for the first 24 hours after the surgery, changing it with a new one every 2 hours. You can take a 10-minute break from ice application every hour. The easiest way to apply ice is to put ice cubes in two examination gloves, tie them together and place them on the eye. Alternatively, you can use cold gel packs.
  • It is recommended that you stay in the hospital for observation for one night after the surgery. You will be discharged the morning after the surgery.
  • Some patients may experience a slight leak from their nose in the first 24 hours after surgery. This is normal and there is no need to worry. You can completely remove the gauze placed on your nose tip to absorb the leakage the day after your discharge.
  • You may shed tears for the first 3 days after surgery.
  • Since silicone splints have air channels, you can breathe while they are in your nose. These silicone splints do not cause any pain or suffering when removed, unlike classical adhesive tampons..
  • You can wash your hair like the way they do in the hairdresser’s & your whole body as you wish, not allowing the plastic protector on your nose to come into contact with water.
  • You can apply make-up after taking your first bath. However, it is recommended that you do not apply make-up to the strips.
  • You are allowed to brush your teeth immediately after the surgery.
  • When you leave the hospital, you will be given eye ointment to apply to your stitches once a day if your surgery was performed with the open technique.
  • After the splints are removed, using a product containing sea water 3 times a day will give you relief.
  • Between the 6th and 10th day, the silicone splints inside your nose and the thin stitches under your nose – in the case of an open technique surgery – are removed. These silicone splints do not hurt when removed.
  • If your surgery was performed with an open technique, it is recommended that you apply scar reducer (silicone gel twice a day for 2 months) and a sunscreen of at least 30 factor from a high-end brand to the tiny incision under your nose after the stitches are removed.
  • There may be some stitches you see inside your nose. These stitches will dissolve on their own over time. NEVER PULL OR CUT THEM.
  • After the strips on your nose are removed, it is recommended that you use a moisturizer and cleanser suitable for your skin.
  • It is recommended that you never sleep on your side or wear glasses for 4 weeks after the surgery. Protecting your beautiful surgery result is entirely in your hands. If you use glasses, please obtain temporary lenses for this period. After 4 weeks, you can switch to lightweight glasses with organic lenses and titanium frames. After 3 months, you can use the glasses you want.
  • After the structures in your nose are removed, do not wipe your nose by pulling it from top to bottom or squeezing it. You can wipe your nose from bottom to top, but please do not squeeze your nose in that case either. To clean the inside, you can close one nostril and blow your nose from the other. It is okay to inhale water into your nose after a week.
  • It is recommended that you do not do sports such as running, jogging, fitness, cardio for the first 4 weeks after the surgery, and contact sports such as football, basketball or combat sports such as boxing for the first 3 months. It is possible to swim in the sea and sunbathe 4 weeks after the plastic protector on your nose is removed. As long as you don’t forget your sunscreen and hat after being operated with the proper surgical technique, the sun will not have any negative effects on your nose. It is best to postpone swimming in the pool until 4 weeks after the protection is removed due to possible bacteria in the water.
  • Massage is not recommended, but if necessary, some patients may be offered massage for a few weeks.
